Say what?!
On the heels of the Great American Eclipse on August 21, 2017, we’ve seen one natural disaster after another. Hurricane’s Harvey and Irma hit Texas and Florida—both record breaking events. Hurricane Maria devastated several island countries including Puerto Rico where the entire country is now without power. If three monster hurricanes hitting US and US territories in one month isn’t mind-blowing, consider that at the same time India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have had record monsoons with massive death tolls. Sierra Leone and Niger have had massive floods, mudslides and thousands of deaths.
There have also been worldwide record breaking heat and fire seasons. California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia, Greece, Brazil, Portugal, Algeria, Tunisia, Greenland, Russia, and Siberia have all had record forest fires. Italy, France, Spain Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia have been in a triple-digit heatwave which they have dubbed, “Lucifer.”
Mexico has had two major earthquakes in less than a month. Yellowstone continues to experience an earthquake swarm, Japan has had two noteworthy earthquakes, beachlines have mysteriously receded hundreds of feet in various places around the world including Brazil and Spain, and the largest solar flare in a decade occurred.
Meanwhile Iran and Russia continue to deepen their apparent permanent footprint in Syria and Israel stealthily destroyed a weapons facility in the Hama province of Syria. Russia is in the midst of conducting a very large military training event making a few border countries very nervous, while North Korea continues to issue nuclear threats to America with increasing frequency. Jesus said these global signs would be like birth pains, getting more severe and more frequent the closer his return was. If this last month was an indicator, I’d say it’s been one of the strongest convergence of birth pains yet.
I know all of that sounds scary, but it’s exactly what Jesus said would happen as we get close to his return. I don’t highlight that to cause fear, but to cause thirst—thirst for the One who can squash your fears and give you true hope.
If the signs of our day are signaling the soon return of the Lord, are you ready? Do you know him? I know this sounds crazy if you don’t follow Christ, but not as crazy as brushing off the thought that He said these times would come. Look around you. Read Matthew 24 and Luke 21 and ask if it lines up with our world today.
